Our women’s team reached the end of the road in the Romanian Cup, as Cluj secured another one-goal victory in the second leg of the semifinal at Iclod, earning their place in the final.
A week earlier in Miercurea Ciuc, Cluj had also won by a single goal, meaning our players needed to overturn that deficit away from home to keep alive their hopes of defending last year’s cup title.
The first half produced very few real scoring opportunities on either side, which only increased the pressure on Szeitl Szilvia’s players. Then, in the 61th minute, somewhat against the run of play, the hosts took the lead from a softly awarded free kick: from 18 metres, Borodi curled an unstoppable shot into the top-left corner with the help of the post.
Szeitl Szilvia responded with three substitutions in an attempt to inject energy into the team, and one of the substitutes, Zvenyák Johanna, ended FK’s three-match goal drought in the 82st minute. Our young talent reacted brilliantly to a low cross from the left and guided the ball into the net.
Unfortunately, we were only able to hope for two minutes that we could still recover and turn the tie around. Another long-range free kick sealed our fate: this time Pînzariu curled the ball from the right side, from a tight angle, into the top-left corner. Böröcz managed only to get a touch on the ball before it crossed the line and set the final score.
Head coach Szeitl Szilvia did not hide her disappointment after the match:
“We are very disappointed. We still have the same problem: we are unable to score goals. Unfortunately, football is decided by goals. Everyone needs to look at themselves and ask whether they did everything possible over these two matches to achieve victory, but unfortunately the results already give us the answer. On Sunday, we must beat Timișoara to finish the season on a more positive note. I would like to congratulate Zvenyák Johanna on her performance — keep it up!”
Our women’s team now has only two matches remaining this season, and only one of them will be played at home: on Sunday at 13:00, we will host Politehnica Timișoara.
