The tournament was held in memory of youth coach Isa Gábor, who passed away four years ago. On the first day, Friday, Honvéd defeated Monor SE to reach the final, while FK Csíkszereda advanced after a penalty shootout victory over Ikarus BSE. As a result, on Saturday the hosts Honvéd faced FK Csíkszereda in the final on the artificial pitch of the Kispest youth academy. In a balanced and highly competitive match played over two 30-minute halves, Deák Kristóf scored the winning goal midway through the second half, securing the trophy of the first Isa Gábor Memorial Tournament for our team.
“It is a great honor for us to have been invited to this tournament. I had a personal connection with Isa Gábor, I knew him, and he did a great deal to ensure that youth development at Honvéd progressed in the right direction,” said our U15 head coach Fogarasi Zoltán after the award ceremony. “This was a high-quality tournament, as the two teams belonging to the regional talent development center also gave their all and were by no means out of place. They made things very difficult for us as well, since we could only advance against Ikarus after penalties. The final was a meeting of two very well-prepared teams, which also proved that academy-level training on both sides of the border is on the right path, as there was no difference between the two teams. I am especially proud that after five days of working together, we were able to finish our 31st match with a victory and, at the same time, a cup triumph. This is a huge experience for the children and a great source of motivation for the future, and for me that is the most important thing. For me, this tournament victory was also like a Christmas present – I could not have wished for a greater gift from the team, and the players also rewarded themselves with this great success. As we approach the holidays, I would like to take this opportunity to wish a blessed and peaceful Christmas to all employees of the academy and the club, to the players, and to everyone who contributed, even in a small way, to the development of these children and to helping them reach this point,” the coach added.
